Top Compression Ring
The second or intermediate ring is a vital component of an air compressor piston ring set, responsible for maintaining the compression of the combustion chamber gases in the piston’s power stroke. This ring is placed between the top and oil control rings and is designed to act as a secondary sealing element that ensures no gas can escape past the top ring.
The piston ring compression is critical for the engine’s optimal performance. A worn-out or faulty intermediate ring can lead to reduced compression and decreased power output and engine efficiency. Second or Intermediate Ring
The Second or intermediate Ring has a two-fold function in an engine. Firstly, it assists the top Compression Ring seal and transfers heat effectively. This helps to enhance the overall performance of the engine. Secondly, it plays a crucial role in oil control by shearing the layer of oil left by the oil Ring. This ensures that the top Compression Ring has enough lubrication while preventing oil from entering the combustion chamber. Therefore, the Second Ring is critical to the engine’s efficient operation and maintenance.
Oil Control Ring
An oil control ring is a type of piston ring that helps regulate the amount of oil that lubricates the piston and cylinder walls in an internal combustion engine. It is located on the piston and is responsible for preventing excess oil from entering the combustion chamber while ensuring that the piston remains properly lubricated.
The oil control ring scrapes excess oil off the cylinder walls as the piston moves up and down, returning it to the engine’s oil supply. This process helps to prevent oil from entering the combustion chamber, which could lead to reduced engine performance or even engine damage.
